A Fortnight Past the Transition from Cursor to Codex: An Unvarnished Assessment
By April 2025, it had become increasingly apparent that AI was approaching commercial viability within the coding domain. Despite its then-nascent positioning as little more than an assistive programming tool, a self-funded subscription to the increasingly popular Cursor was procured at a cost of $20 per month. Shortly thereafter, in late April 2025, the company began provisioning enterprise-tier subscriptions for its employees. Notably, Cursor voluntarily refunded the remaining balance of the personal subscription — a gesture that fostered a decidedly favorable disposition toward the platform. [IMAGE:1]
This arrangement persisted uninterrupted through April 2026.
The overall experience proved to be transformative. Relative to conventional programming methodologies, Cursor represents what can only be described as a paradigmatic shift.
Cursor's principal advantage lies in its tight integration with the real-time coding environment. Features such as tab completion, Cmd+K, Agent, and Plan Mode are embedded directly within the editor, enabling seamless function modification, page completion, and code explanation under human-directed oversight. Alternatively, code can be generated within Cursor and subsequently transferred to a preferred IDE for manual refinement. Moreover, Cursor functions as a model-agnostic third-party IDE, permitting users to select from a range of mainstream large language models without being locked into any single provider.
At that juncture, Cursor was not without its shortcomings. By way of illustration, no native Cursor plugin was available for Android Studio; to maintain code-location synchronization between Cursor and AS and obviate the need for manual reorientation upon switching back, a third-party plugin — IDE Sync — had to be installed. Furthermore, Cursor's command-line interface presented material deficiencies, with MCP integration and, subsequently, SKILLS recognition exhibiting defects in their initial iterations.
Such impediments, however, proved to be ephemeral. The velocity of AI advancement was matched by Cursor's own rapid release cycle. As successive versions incorporated enhancements and underlying model capabilities continued to strengthen, a marked inflection point was reached in the second half of 2025, coinciding with Claude's ascendance. Cursor's code comprehension and generation capabilities were observed to have ascended to a distinctly higher echelon.
The most pronounced shift was observed in knowledge retrieval dynamics. Previously, inquiring with fellow developers had been necessary to resolve nuanced business-logic details — a non-trivial undertaking given the considerable complexity of the project's domain rules. Over successive Cursor iterations, however, an increasing proportion of such queries were directed to the tool itself. Consequently, the volume of manual code authoring diminished steadily, as Cursor proved capable of addressing the vast majority of use cases autonomously.
On February 14, 2026, an article was published on the author's WeChat official account detailing the following: a fully functional mini-program — featuring respectable visual polish — had been designed and implemented from conception to deployment in a compressed time frame using Cursor alone, with zero lines of code manually authored. This was accomplished despite the complete absence of prior WeChat mini-program development experience.
It was at that juncture that a broader thesis began to crystallize: the twilight of conventional software development was approaching with accelerating certainty.
By April 2026, Cursor's pricing architecture and enterprise strategy had grown increasingly complex. The platform transitioned from a fixed-license model to a consumption-based billing structure, resulting in elevated and less predictable costs. In response, management determined that operations in the China region would be migrated from Cursor to OpenAI Codex.
As wryly observed on the professional networking platform Maimai: it had not occurred to anyone that Cursor — rather than the engineering team — would be the first casualty of the transition.
Beginning in mid-April 2026, Codex was formally adopted as the organization's primary development platform.
From the outset, Codex presented a markedly different paradigm relative to Cursor. The latter had been perceived primarily as an IDE — a development environment intrinsically intertwined with code authoring, augmented with lateral AI capabilities. Codex, by contrast, presented itself as an Agent architected to orchestrate a diverse array of work scenarios and task types.
Notably, Cursor's own subsequent release — commencing in April 2026 — underwent substantial architectural revision, progressively migrating from its IDE-centric form factor toward an Agent-oriented paradigm, a development that catalyzed extensive discourse within the developer community. In this observer's assessment, such a trajectory constitutes both a logical and an inevitable evolution aligned with broader industry currents.
Codex's capabilities are formidable in scope, with code generation representing but one dimension of its core competency set. Its release cadence is equally noteworthy: new versions have been shipping at approximately two-day intervals of late. The interaction paradigm itself telegraphs the platform's strategic ambition — namely, to function as a super Agent capable of orchestrating capability execution across an expansive spectrum of operational contexts.
Following approximately a fortnight of sustained usage, Codex has proven to be a genuinely end-to-end solution that delivers on its operational promise.
The approach bears a conceptual resemblance to the OpenClaw Agent framework, though the connective tissue has been rendered substantially more accessible. Rather than burdening users with elaborate configuration requirements, connectivity with external tools and applications is achieved through built-in plugin primitives that require little more than a toggle-based activation mechanism.
Concurrently, advanced capabilities — including Computer Use — can be activated with minimal friction. The recently launched Codex Chrome extension further augments browser-automation proficiency, thereby enabling end-to-end workflow automation across a broad spectrum of operational processes. Even tasks of considerable complexity fall within Codex's direct execution ambit.
It should be acknowledged that, when assessed solely on code-generation performance, the Cursor + Claude 4.7 combination presently maintains a marginal edge over Codex + GPT-5.5. That said, the performance differential is not material — the Codex stack has been deemed sufficient for practical, day-to-day development requirements.
One additional development merits mention: the author previously documented GPT Image 2, whose image-generation capabilities are remarkably robust. Consequently, Codex is directly endowed with formidable visual-processing competencies by extension.
A concluding assessment is in order: Cursor delivered the first visceral encounter with the transformative potential of AI-assisted software development. Codex, however, represents a more profound inflection point — the first instance in which AI was perceived not merely as a programming adjunct but as a genuine Agent. It surpasses prior Agent-based tooling — including Lobster — in both capability and usability, and stands as a bona fide super Agent. Codex, by this measure, is demonstrably closer to the next paradigm.
